<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, we did it! We drove cross country this past week, arriving in California last night. I antiqued a little along the way, specifically in Nashville, Memphis, and Albuquerque. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TZO_JQF7Zbw/UQ9PrurDL5I/AAAAAAAACZM/38djhzrQgog/s1600/l-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TZO_JQF7Zbw/UQ9PrurDL5I/AAAAAAAACZM/38djhzrQgog/s320/l-1.jpg" width="292" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
By far, I felt that Memphis had the most to offer and I will definitely be going back there on vacation. There were several great shops and fabulous food- BBQ in particular! <a href="http://www.toadhallmemphis.com/" target="_blank"> Toad Hall Antiques </a>was a lot of fun (fabulous display!) as well as the Antique Warehouse Mall. Don't be daunted by the outward looks of the later store. Also, try to ignore both the smell outside and the XXX Movie Theater directly down the street. It really is a gem. I found an early 20th century perfume bottle, a vintage pair of ballet slippers, old Antiques Magazines for the car ride, an old jewelry box (I collect the ones that are leather and velvet and were used for specific pieces of jewelry), and a sterling cross from 1897. So, you see there are some treasures there!</div>

Our first day as residents of California, we decided to go to Alameda for the Antiques Faire. We actually went last month as well just to check it out for my business... The difference between the two days was amazing! Last month was rainy & cold. Today was absolutely beautiful! I was blown away with the quality of dealers and the overall atmosphere at the show... I'm so excited to be a part of this group starting next month:)</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Dear Friends, I'm sending this note to my cherished friends and clients with a bittersweet sigh and sense of longing. My husband started a new job today in Silicon Valley, CA and we will be moving there in only a few short days. Oh my! I've already sent out emails to many customers but just in case you didn't get a note, know that I'm thinking of you as I pack my myriad of smalls and head out into the blue unknown. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nDaFZ6P6Q3w/UP42KL8WIYI/AAAAAAAACYc/TH6y-z4iVgw/s1600/Bird-Envelope-adv-Graphics-Fairy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="249" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nDaFZ6P6Q3w/UP42KL8WIYI/AAAAAAAACYc/TH6y-z4iVgw/s320/Bird-Envelope-adv-Graphics-Fairy.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will continue to sell at shows and antique markets and possibly open a booth like I had in both Raleigh, NC and at Hagerstown, MD. In some aspects, however, I am shying away from the booth idea just because I'm not sure I could find the right fit for my merchandise. My first show will be March 3rd at the huge Alameda Flea Market. Wish me luck!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If you'd like to come by Flotsam and Jetsam one last time, I'd love to see you. My last day is this Friday, the 25th. Merchandise will be packed up Wed- Friday. Give me a call @ 919-889-5553 to make sure I'm there so I can bid you farewell!<br />
<br />
Don't worry though! I'll still be posting on the blog and acquiring the unusual tidbit and whimsical creation for your own collection...</div>
<br />

I can't believe it's been almost 2 months since I've posted! Oh me, oh my! Well, life sometimes just gets in the way of the best intentions... Gwyneth (my 19 month old) has been walking and talking like crazy. She does something new everyday. And my business has been chugging along. October and November were both slow months- Did any of you other proprietors notice that? But December sales are strong -- Hopefully a sign of things to come. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I did want to share some images of the shop as well as a few wonderful things I've recently found...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lGhLix1hoqA/UMs8dH0mJcI/AAAAAAAACWg/te589gq5Tl0/s1600/IMG_5484.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lGhLix1hoqA/UMs8dH0mJcI/AAAAAAAACWg/te589gq5Tl0/s400/IMG_5484.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, this is a little overview of one area- I'm so pleased with how it turned out! I had a dear little elf (a tall one to be sure) help me put up the quilt- I think it really ties in well with the space. The small cabinet is adorable - Perfect for all my bits and pieces. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PGzRJYlVED8/UMs8d0Dch0I/AAAAAAAACWk/vwbXlQQEZts/s1600/IMG_5486.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PGzRJYlVED8/UMs8d0Dch0I/AAAAAAAACWk/vwbXlQQEZts/s320/IMG_5486.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's a shot of my back room... I think it's finally come together. I just love the cigar cabinet. A really wonderful piece that I purchased from <a href="http://www.tiaraday.com/" target="_blank">Tiara Day</a> (which is fabulous by the way!). I desperately want to make a trip there before Santa arrives.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R1hYSFoHbPE/UMs8eipjETI/AAAAAAAACWw/6Ir16S19NKk/s1600/IMG_5489.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R1hYSFoHbPE/UMs8eipjETI/AAAAAAAACWw/6Ir16S19NKk/s320/IMG_5489.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now for a few detail pictures. The above Christmas mercury balls are splendid... And so very fragile. Sadness ensued when I broke 2 of them getting into the shop one morning. But these are the survivors... They are a really great size. Much larger than the small ones that are relatively common.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rPtk4n9w2kQ/UMs8ftVmJkI/AAAAAAAACW4/cmE9lDvn2qM/s1600/IMG_5491.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rPtk4n9w2kQ/UMs8ftVmJkI/AAAAAAAACW4/cmE9lDvn2qM/s320/IMG_5491.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's a little snippet of one of my mannequins. I just love this Masonic collar. Really great color!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-19vowX1yBsw/UMs8gd1rnRI/AAAAAAAACXA/3J9sFrqucA0/s1600/IMG_5494.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-19vowX1yBsw/UMs8gd1rnRI/AAAAAAAACXA/3J9sFrqucA0/s320/IMG_5494.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wanted to share this idea with all you shop owners (and jewelry lovers). I took an old Victorian photo album that stands on its own and used it as a display for my brooches. The book is not in very good condition so the pin holes don't deter from its value. But a really clever idea if I do say so myself:)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7AqCFupUbEQ/UMs8hbgeySI/AAAAAAAACXI/ZVn3LuSLpjA/s1600/IMG_5504.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7AqCFupUbEQ/UMs8hbgeySI/AAAAAAAACXI/ZVn3LuSLpjA/s320/IMG_5504.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also want to highlight a few wonderful little things I've recently acquired... Like this AMAZING pre 1920 owl German Christmas light. It's just perfect! I had a Father Christmas and a Pierrot clown but both of those already sold. They are so very rare. My Christmas book doesn't even have an image of the owl! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NjzAdKL79kU/UMs8iNTCkmI/AAAAAAAACXQ/II5A7wbnhNk/s1600/IMG_5505.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NjzAdKL79kU/UMs8iNTCkmI/AAAAAAAACXQ/II5A7wbnhNk/s320/IMG_5505.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-izuiauMOJnE/UMs8jJvE53I/AAAAAAAACXY/vxzsuFF_2Bc/s1600/IMG_5507.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-izuiauMOJnE/UMs8jJvE53I/AAAAAAAACXY/vxzsuFF_2Bc/s320/IMG_5507.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And what about this stunning Art Nouveau Unger Brothers sterling silver pendant? Look at the detail! I just love this piece... A real find at a show from The Pink Poet!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0yn1ak4EywQ/UMs8ksdmOUI/AAAAAAAACXo/HtWo8L9dx9Q/s1600/IMG_5511.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0yn1ak4EywQ/UMs8ksdmOUI/AAAAAAAACXo/HtWo8L9dx9Q/s320/IMG_5511.JPG" width="320" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And last but not least something a little naughty:) This is a Japan turtle lady... Who opens up to reveal a surprise! I had one from Germany (which usually has the best quality) but this one is a nice piece and above average for a Japan example. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CIWLSeElaOU/UMs8mmyCxrI/AAAAAAAACYA/3Jnji8w9zr4/s1600/IMG_5517.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CIWLSeElaOU/UMs8mmyCxrI/AAAAAAAACYA/3Jnji8w9zr4/s320/IMG_5517.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So hopefully Santa will bring this little naughty to a nice little antiquer!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope you've enjoyed seeing the shop and some of my treasures. Please inquire about anything you see and let me know if you have questions. And I hope to keep up with my posts a little better!</div>

Very excited to start reading this book... I found the author through her blog<a href="http://mabelshouse.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> Mabel's House </a>(which is absolutely fabulous). I highly recommend reading her wax poetic about life. </div>

Just signed up for Jeanne Oliver's new class, Creatively Made Home. It starts up in Oct. so you still have plenty of time to sign up-- I recently finished her business e-course and it was really worth it. Not only did it encourage me to start both Constant Contact (a business marketing email service) but also made me think more about my business Facebook page and blog. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Can we say cute... Once again, <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/Neatcurios?ref=search_shop_redirect" target="_blank">Neatcurios</a> on Etsy has brought the goods. Just bought this little guy this month. He's wonderful! I have him in my kitchen perched on a marbleized 19th c. box with a small hand forged key swinging nearby... Makes me so happy!</div>

Want, need, must buy. But sadly, cannot until I sell some flotsam and jetsam:). The ring and earrings are from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/AbandonedMemory" target="_blank">Abandoned Memory </a>on Etsy. I am IN LOVE with these pieces. All handwork- Amazing detail. I just love the sense of history encompassed in the tintypes. Must save trusty pennies.</div>

<a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/FrenchSentiments" target="_blank">French Sentiments</a>... Even the name takes one back to another time and place. Kathy Barrick's latest creation is so much fun! She actually sourced the spider at Flotsam and Jetsam! Kathy's work is not only online. I also carry her pieces at the shop so stop by to peruse her creations...</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tootasinfoot.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> Toot.</a> That's toot as in foot, not toot as in boot. How fabulous is this? A new British blog with the most intriguing, even occasionally cheeky, look at antiques. I love her perspective and how she takes us through her car boot purchases.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Jeanne Oliver's <a href="http://www.jeanneoliverdesigns.com/pages/shophome.htm" target="_blank">new collection</a> is a modern twist on vintage... I bought the Amelia Messenger Bag on a whim. I thought it would be perfect for foraging thru flea markets- Lots of room to stash antique and vintage finds. Visit her<a href="http://jeanneoliverdesigns.com/blog/" target="_blank"> blog</a> for more info on winning a $500 package from the line.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
So, this is a little peek into the life of me. Hope you enjoyed the randomness! </div>

So, as promised- Here are the pictures of my new sign. Yipee! Thanks to Rebecca for helping make my vision a reality. I just love Spencerian script (the bird is a simplified version of a 19th century design)... Google the phrase and you'll find lovely swirls and curls to enliven your penmanship.<br />
I hope to blog within the next two weeks about an August window display and shots of some fabulousness from a N.C. buying trip! <br />

Just a quick little blurb to share some fun happenings!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. Flotsam and Jetsam now has an official sign at the new location. A local artist hand painted a revised Spencerian Script bird that I found on a 19th century calling card... I'll share photos of the actual sign tomorrow. Here's just a little teaser: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a8nCWR19IK8/UAhyx6J0C4I/AAAAAAAACQE/LAfm4IqaOMs/s1600/dictionary_penmanship4_s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="198" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a8nCWR19IK8/UAhyx6J0C4I/AAAAAAAACQE/LAfm4IqaOMs/s320/dictionary_penmanship4_s.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can also see an example on the blog header in the bottom right hand corner. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This design is also on my new business card... Rebecca Smith, a very talented local graphic designer, helped work this vision into a viable concept.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. I've been on a buying spree! *(See #3 for the most current trip) The last couple of weeks I've found so many wonderful things... Several dealers I work with have provided the most magical stock. Now, I've just got to get them priced and out on the floor... Come by this weekend for the latest vintage/antique goodies!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. A sincere thank you to my dear friend, Laura Orcutt of <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lady-and-the-Librarian/81628008629" target="_blank">The Lady and the Librarian</a> for hosting Ben and I. She has fabulous treasures just waiting to tempt you at her Raleigh, NC locations in Cameron Village. I found some spectacular pieces that I just can't wait to put out at the shop. While in Raleigh, I also visited two of my favorite shops, <a href="http://suzannasantiques.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">SuzAnna's Antiques</a> and <a href="http://shabbylaneantiques.com/Home.html" target="_blank">Shabby Lane Antiques</a>, both off of Capital Blvd. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
4. A blogging buddy, Sue of <a href="http://www.vintagerescue.typepad.com/" target="_blank">Vintage Rescue Squad</a>, was just honored by my favorite magazine, <a href="http://www.homesandantiques.com/" target="_blank">Home and Antiques</a>. She was named one of the top 50 blogs by this fabulous British publication! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zWEB6ObnDXo/UAh4GSuF4MI/AAAAAAAACQQ/5ohKzg7ipWQ/s1600/cover_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zWEB6ObnDXo/UAh4GSuF4MI/AAAAAAAACQQ/5ohKzg7ipWQ/s1600/cover_2.jpg" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
5. Just found a new store in Takoma Park,Washington DC : <a href="http://trohvshop.com/" target="_blank">Trovh</a>. It is truly exceptional- Great design, wonderful experience- Really fabulous, fun place. Quoting the header, "a collection of artful objects discovered or found". I found a vintage mother of pearl button necklace, a handmade sliding ruler bracelet, some interior design books, and some "foodie magazines" for my husband. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
OK... enough gabbing. Must get back to work... And pricing. Perhaps I'm putting off pricing things so I can hoard all the fabulousness for myself. Hmmm:)</div>

Ever since college, I have "collected" little things which bring joy to my life. I started off with handmade textiles and laces and then moved on to dishes ... then vintage hats... Now 19th c. paintings... Whatever I'm collecting, however, one thing remains constant. The items make me feel at home. They add warmth and comfort to an otherwise empty room. </div>

I often ask customers what they collect for I feel it reveals a lot about an individual. It's amazing to hear the myriad of answers... From 19th century children's ceramics to early American quilts to Buffalo Blue Willow -- What variety!</div>

For me, the shop is an extension of my magpie habits. Currently, my house is on the smallish side with little room for acquiring new objects. Thus, the shop is an "enabler"! Now of course, these are MY personal favorites -- You never know what you will find!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
On a side note, wanted to spot light a fellow blogger and antiquer, <a href="http://lizmathews.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Liz Mathews</a>. Liz just did a post on my shop and took the most FABULOUS pictures... I am so honored that she chose my shop to write about! Visit Liz's blog as well as her 2 Etsy boutiques - Liz Mathews' <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/lizmathewsvintage" target="_blank">Vintage Treasures</a> and <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheFrenchPoste?ref=ss_profile" target="_blank">The French Poste</a>. You won't be disappointed!<br />
<br />
Also, I plan on doing a future post on theft in antique stores. I've been doing some interviews as well as research so hopefully I'll be able to give an informed overview of this serious topic. I was "inspired" to focus on this due to the overwhelming problem of theft I've had in the last two months. Over 6 items have been stolen! If you have a chance, leave a comment concerning your thoughts on this subject. <br />

The <i>really</i> special things stick with me though, either because I take them home or price them too high:) Moreover, most of the items I keep tend to be small and dainty for a little cabinet I have or books for reading and/or collecting. <br />
On this particular note, I come to a new acquisition. For now, it's in the shop. I'm hard pressed to find space for it at Abode de Newton (my house). The lovely Terry (a trusted local "picker"-more on what that is later) found this special "set"... A 1796 edition of <i>Pindar's Works</i>. Who was Pindar? Who really cares?** It's the binding that make these two orphaned books unique! Gilt, leather, patina... Yes, they have these things. But the <u>bird stamping</u> is what I fell in love with. Two birds eating cherries from a bowl. Simply wonderful!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-y4LQa60C5-U/T0U-Qit8_FI/AAAAAAAACJc/dnIeb_IYVzU/s1600/IMG_5290.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-y4LQa60C5-U/T0U-Qit8_FI/AAAAAAAACJc/dnIeb_IYVzU/s320/IMG_5290.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Such an extraordinary binding make these books a fabulous piece of history. Sadly, they've been separated from their brothers and sisters making them incomplete sets. The bane of a booksellers existence- That and <a href="http://www.ehow.com/how_5597739_protect-books-papers-silverfish.html" target="_blank">silverfish</a>. But I'm just happy these beauties have survived over 200 years. And the best part is the text is lively and interesting! And at $22 each, they won't be here for much longer...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
**OK- For those that are curious, I googled him and not much came up. Once again, let's focus on what's important- The birds!<br />
<br />
<br />SOLD-Thanks!<br />

Some Interesting Facts Concerning Cut Steel Buttons<br />
___________________<br />
<br />
-By the last quarter of the 18th century, cut steel became an alternative (albeit expensive) to diamonds and its substitutes, marcasite and paste.<br />

-The French begin their love affair with faceted steel not only for this monetary reason but also for patriotic pride. King Louis XV asked the nobility and upper classes to give their jewels to the state to help fund the Seven Years War. </div>

By the late 19th c. this had been reduced to 5 facets. A rule of thumb: the finer and older the piece the more facets the stud will have. Also, true cut steel buttons have rivets showing on the underside. Beware of stamped imitations!</div>

On a collecting note, I made a quick visit to the Gaithersburg Antique Show. I was rather unimpressed initially but then found some really fun dealers. I spent (over) my allotted budget and had a swell time! I'm especially excited about some vintage & antique religious pieces as well as sets of fabulous black glass faux fabric buttons. I'll take some shots of the new merchandise soon...</div>

European designers cashed into this "new woman"- A wild creature who cut her hair, smoked cigarettes, and showed off her knees. Sequins, feathers, and other accoutrements bedecked the flapper. But the one singular aspect was her saucy necklace. Czechoslovakia was often the source of this quintessential accessory. </div>

Created in 1918, Czechoslovakia produced glass beads, faceted and molded glass stones and metalwork stampings. Filigree necklaces, bracelets, brooches, buckles, clips, earrings, and rings in the Art Deco style flooded the ever hungry American market. Geometric designs and simple pronged settings are characteristic of this era. Glass bead sautoirs are another Czech specialty. (Sautoirs are defined as a very long chain or beaded necklace, often terminating in a tassel). </div>

Czech jewelry is typically unmarked but look for the signature in the circumference
of the jump ring or on the clasp. The style of Czechoslovakian pieces,
however, is unmistakable. Fine metalwork, Victorian Revival intricacy,
faceted stones, lots of rhinestones, nice prong settings- These are
the marks of Bohemian jewelry from the eras between WWI and WWII.</div>

Welcome to 2012... And good-bye to 2011. What a fabulous year! Here's just a tiny snippet of what happened to Flotsam and Jetsam in the past 12 months:<br />
<br />
Gwyneth Marie Newton, born May 9th, 2011. The greatest joy in my life. Here she is this December with Mommy. She's just wonderful! Her big blue eyes and rosebud lips are ever present reminders of her being a part of me. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bMMLR0k2ZZw/TwsbCwfYEwI/AAAAAAAACEU/gGSaEUayEd0/s1600/018%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bMMLR0k2ZZw/TwsbCwfYEwI/AAAAAAAACEU/gGSaEUayEd0/s320/018%25282%2529.JPG" width="203" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ILjqwtaCHMI/TwsbJRmJo4I/AAAAAAAACEk/UXcCLC7gDHU/s1600/025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ILjqwtaCHMI/TwsbJRmJo4I/AAAAAAAACEk/UXcCLC7gDHU/s320/025.JPG" width="192" /></a>September 3rd, 2011. Moved down the street to 3730 Howard Avenue. Best business decision of my life! Sales have been strong and I have a deeper sense of community with the other dealers. We are in a beautiful historic building with tons of natural light and fantastic floor space. I couldn't ask for a better location...<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
August 2011- Made the choice to join Kate Fine of <a href="http://kensingtonantiquerow.com/hope_chest/index.html">The Hope Chest </a>in this before mentioned shop. We share the store and each bring a vision and zeal to the business. She is encouraging and knowledgeable. I am grateful God brought her into my life. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1NPSxCoEB6Y/TwsbEwHEiII/AAAAAAAACEc/jWgIbOHciAo/s1600/382996_10150479661400990_678065989_10263157_2084736656_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1NPSxCoEB6Y/TwsbEwHEiII/AAAAAAAACEc/jWgIbOHciAo/s320/382996_10150479661400990_678065989_10263157_2084736656_n.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
November 2011 -Ben, my loving husband of 7 years, lost 50 pounds over the course of the year. He finished his first marathon in Richmond VA in November. I'm so proud of him!<br />
<br />
<br />
So, that's the VERY short version. Other things include:<br />
<ul>
<li>Drawing closer to Tim Green, a dear friend of 9 + years. He works and consigns at the shop and is a blessing to Flotsam and Jetsam. Visit his online catalog- <a href="http://www.trocadero.com/greenlion/catalog.html">The Green Lion</a>.</li>
<li> Finally gave a profit to Beth Youkel of Osiris Books. She supported me for over a year at the old location, never taking in any money. What a wonderful partner! </li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Working full time. Gwyneth is now in full time daycare - What a transition! The business growth made a distinct change in my life- No longer do I sit languidly waiting on customers to haphazardly walk in. Busy, vibrant, and exciting - All new adjectives for Flotsam and Jetsam.</li>
</ul>
<br />
So, all in all it was one of the best years of my life. Blessings abounded and friendships blossomed. And here's a toast farewell to 2011~<br />
<br />
Looking forward to doing regular blog posts focusing on Flotsam and Jetsam and our inventory of every changing bibelots and curiosities. January entries will feature Victorian cut steel buttons, new acquisitions from the South, and Art Deco Czech jewelry And just a little whimsy and wonder!<br />

I can't believe it's been almost 2 months since I've posted. Time has flown by... It's amazing how caught up we can be in our daily lives. Travel, family obligations, work- It all conspires against us bloggers... Then there's the inevitable writer's block and procrastination bug (which has often bitten me!)...<br /><br />On a personal note, I do have one other excuse- I'm 19 weeks pregnant! We are so very excited about Baby Newton. Next week we find out whether it's a boy or a girl... So much to look forward to. We will soon be a family of 3!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TPaVkg8VWzI/AAAAAAAACDE/_7Ej2rpl3nc/s1600/IMG_5170.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TPaVkg8VWzI/AAAAAAAACDE/_7Ej2rpl3nc/s400/IMG_5170.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5545784445704166194" border="0" /></a>So, onto <a href="http://coloradolady.blogspot.com/">Vintage Thingy Thursday</a>... Wow! So much has been happening with the shop, Etsy, and Rubylane that I've really been on my toes. But now with fabulous fall here, I wanted to stop in for a little "chat". <br /><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TKzigsQl6gI/AAAAAAAACBM/CrMtckGWx3Q/s1600/IMG_5158.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TKzigsQl6gI/AAAAAAAACBM/CrMtckGWx3Q/s400/IMG_5158.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5525039894141200898" border="0" /></a>My main objective is to share my delightfully spooky Halloween window. Isn't it just wonderful? It's even a little more sinister than I originally envisioned but I really think it still works. <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TKziguQVDCI/AAAAAAAACBE/9RdxDjWJo-M/s1600/IMG_5156.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 258px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TKziguQVDCI/AAAAAAAACBE/9RdxDjWJo-M/s400/IMG_5156.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5525039894676966434" border="0" /></a>We used a variety of everyday antiques along with some magical props that set off the tone of this vignette. Weathered sculptures and busts add charm and sophistication while the crystals really add some sparkle (along with the crystal necklaces). We also used dark wood to help carry a more wicked look. <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TKzigZqBqEI/AAAAAAAACA8/sYHWrDUoxow/s1600/IMG_5155.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TKzigZqBqEI/AAAAAAAACA8/sYHWrDUoxow/s400/IMG_5155.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5525039889147603010" border="0" /></a>So, hopefully my next post won't be a month from now- I also promise to try my best to catch up on reading everyone's writings... Ta-ta! And don't forget to visit <a href="http://coloradolady.blogspot.com/">Vintage Thingie Thursday </a>for more vintage goodies!<br /><br /><p><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TKzlADHkM0I/AAAAAAAACBU/MsQFgE6_rxU/s1600/LinkBadge-8.png"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TKzlADHkM0I/AAAAAAAACBU/MsQFgE6_rxU/s400/LinkBadge-8.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5525042631876555586" border="0" /></a><img src="http://i534.photobucket.com/albums/ee349/GDest07/Flotsam%20Jetsam/staceysig.png" /></p>Staceyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16451209184614345786noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-108676049980185250.post-24259408740450192802010-09-03T12:10:00.000-07:002010-09-03T12:26:14.988-07:00School Days!<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TIFIxL6U9JI/AAAAAAAACAc/erUG7FZ8mA8/s1600/IMG_5142.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TIFIxL6U9JI/AAAAAAAACAc/erUG7FZ8mA8/s400/IMG_5142.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512767428726420626" border="0" /></a>With the children back in school, I thought it would be cute to do a classroom scene for September's window. We chose a colorful quilt backdrop along with a gorgeous wooden frame. <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TIFIzD-W0GI/AAAAAAAACAk/lgUx7ukg2zY/s1600/IMG_5144.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TIFIzD-W0GI/AAAAAAAACAk/lgUx7ukg2zY/s400/IMG_5144.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512767460955574370" border="0" /></a>Details of the scene include a student desk, a "teacher's" chair, a radio flyer and some wonderful treasures sprinkled about. A porcelain doll and a worn velvet toy chest also grace the window.<br /><br />Speaking of trinkets and baubles, Beth Niquette of <a href="http://thebestheartsarecrunchy.blogspot.com/">The Best Hearts Are Crunchy</a> won the $50 gift certificate to my shop (both online and here at my brick and mortar). Even though I don't sew, I think lace and it's variants are simply divine. The more ornate the better. The early pieces are especially unique, and the care taken to create them is amazing. The quality is apparent even at a cursory glance. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TGgs2nyJnSI/AAAAAAAAB-c/On1kczHY_Aw/s1600/IMG_5037.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 215px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TGgs2nyJnSI/AAAAAAAAB-c/On1kczHY_Aw/s400/IMG_5037.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5505699861364317474" border="0" /></a>Vintage Cotton Trim<br /><br />Perfect for dressing up that simple top, vintage trim can really add a new dimension to clothing. Many high end shops such as Anthropologie already use this concept on a variety of its pieces, although their laces are new. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TGgs2j0ydlI/AAAAAAAAB-U/NGMIqTgwLVM/s1600/IMG_5031.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TGgs2j0ydlI/AAAAAAAAB-U/NGMIqTgwLVM/s400/IMG_5031.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5505699860301641298" border="0" /></a>Wonderful Black Embroidered Lace<br /><br />I've just listed some examples of this obsession in my <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/sweettea16?ref=top_trail">Etsy</a> shop. I plan to continuously update the site with these treasures. Hopefully someone will discover my trove of trims... And will love them as much as I. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TGgs2SDFgYI/AAAAAAAAB-M/rdQEEl-kUHE/s1600/IMG_5017.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 256px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7dzD0ZhfEL8/TGgs2SDFgYI/AAAAAAAAB-M/rdQEEl-kUHE/s400/IMG_5017.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5505699855529771394" border="0" /></a>Antique Lace Medallion<br /><br /></div><p style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://i534.photobucket.com/albums/ee349/GDest07/Flotsam%20Jetsam/staceysig.png" /></p>Staceyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16451209184614345786noreply@blogger.com
